After the long bus ride up the canyon with my brother in law, Dan, who was running his first marathon, I enjoyed seeing Fly and Kelli at the start.  I felt fine and decided to stick with my plan of starting off with the 3:05 group.  After about the first 6 miles I was starting to tell I needed to slow down a bit.  Unfortunately I quickly fell about and got worse and worse as the race went on.  I really wanted to quit at about the 18 mile mark, but forced myself to keep putting one foot in front of the other.  I never walked, but I was not moving very fast.  It was great to see Smooth out there cheering on the runners.  That gave me a little boost.  Near the finish I saw my sweety and stopped and gave her a kiss.  I finished and was very tired.  I was about to excite the finish area when I realized I really wasn't doing well.  I went to the med tent and started throwing up and my limbs and head went all numb.  After about an hour and a half in the med tent and 3 IV bags I felt good enough to leave.  I still continued to commit for the next couple hours, but eventually felt normal again latter in the afternoon.  I don't know what happened to me. but I do know I pushed myself to my limit on that race.

so sorry it was a rough one for you Rhett -- was it really hot or just one of those days?

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 12:02:49 from 204.113.19.47

Geeze Rhett that sounds awful. Did you get dehydrated? You and Kelli both were puking.

I'm glad you were feeling normal again by afternoon. Hopefully this was in time to get your motivation for running the next marathon. So what is next?

It was great to talk with you and your bro -in-law at the start.

From Rhett on Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 18:28:47 from 184.12.185.116

Tim, no the temps were nice. I didn't care for the strong head winds, but that wasn't the problem. I'm wondering if I got a bit of altitude sickness.

Fly, it was fun seeing you. You looked strong when you passed me around mile 10. I think I hydrated well. I just got sick. I don't know when I'll do my next marathon. I'm thinking it won't be until next year.

From timp on Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 19:18:31 from 144.189.100.28

well that stinks, man. hey at least you didn't hurt anything, right?

From Kelli on Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 19:59:32 from 67.172.235.55

Dang Rhett! I am sorry! I wish I had been a little faster, we could have kept each other company in our misery. Of course, I walked A LOT!!! I wish I had known you were in the med tent, I was in their with Scott at a little after the 4 hour mark. I saw a guy laying down with an IV, I bet that was you. DANG, I wish it had gone better for you. Talking to me at the start probably got you sick, it must be very contagious!

Hope all is well now and you are feeling better. Congratulations on finishing a miserable race! I was so happy to see you (and shocked!)

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 21:30:40 from 166.70.192.189

Rhett, Have you had problems with altitude sickness before? I had a friend that used to puck the first night every time we went backpacking at over 10,000 feet. I think there are now some meds that help?

From Rhett on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 20:36:26 from 184.10.176.174

Tim, yes it was miserable, but you are right it is way better than getting injured.

Kelli, yep that was me in the med tent. They said I was the only one who had needed an IV up till the time I left. I hope Scott was alright. I can't believe you didn't need medical assistance.

Fly, the same thing happened to me once after SGM and once when I was up above 10000 feet. It's the only thing I can figure even though I have run plenty of marathons at that altitude withou getting sick.

How did Dan do?

From Kelli on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 11:42:00 from 67.172.235.55

Was Dan waiting for you in the med tent? If so, I talked to him. He said, "You think your husband is bad, that guy over there has been on an IV for an hour." For some reason I think he was with you.

At times I wish I had the ability to push myself hard enough to need medical attention. But, when my body does not want to push, I just do not have the ability to make it. Once I "quit" at mile 14 and let my body dictate when to run and when to walk, I was not nearly as sick. It was pushing the pace and forcing myself that was making me ill. In hind sight, I wish I had not quit, but I was miserable and just needed to make the last 12 miles easier. ;o)

Hope you are recuperating well!

From Rhett on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 14:16:13 from 170.215.58.122

Kelli, yes that was Dan (He is a trainer for BYU sports so was helping out a bit while he waited for me.)and that was me. I'm feeling fine and have been since Saturday afternoon. How are you doing.

Fly, Dan ran a 3:58:??. He was happy with that.

From Kelli on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 17:04:39 from 67.172.235.55

OH, man, he was a nice guy. We chatted for a few minutes over the fence, and then I got them to let me in the med tent (which is harder than you think). He talked to me for a minute in there, too. So wish I had known.

I am feeling fine. I felt better by Monday and was starving. I have eaten nothing but junk since, it is all I have wanted!

2 of my kids and my husband have since gotten sick. it is a nasty little germ, whatever it is!

From fly on the Wall on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 20:51:38 from 166.70.192.189

I think my wife and I both got it and it was NASTY. We are both recovering.

From Kelli on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 21:23:01 from 67.172.235.55

ARE YOU KIDDING????

From Rhett on Thu, Jun 14, 2012 at 09:05:37 from 170.215.58.122

Sorry to hear that Fly. I hope you're both feeling better.

I still don't think mine was any type of flu bug. It just didn't last long enough, but who knows?

From Smooth on Sat, Jun 16, 2012 at 09:45:54 from 174.27.220.150

So sorry you were feeling so sick! When you ran by, I could tell something's not right. You didn't have your happy smile rosy cheeks that is your trademark! When Doone told me you were getting IV in the med tent, I was heart sick. I seriously worried that it was food poisoning that caused your vomiting. Phew, glad I wasn't the "guilty culprit" and you have had no injuries.

WAY to push through and tough it out! Hope you've had a fun scout trip and are enjoying the weekend! Tell Doone Hi, wish I had connected with her...it was all Lowell's fault! :)

From DaleG on Tue, Jun 19, 2012 at 22:14:41 from 152.216.7.5

I hope you're doing ok now, Rhett.

From Rhett on Wed, Jun 20, 2012 at 16:27:08 from 170.215.58.122

Dale, thanks for checking in. Physically I've been fine since a couple days after the marathon, mentally it fried me though. I have had no desire to exercise at all since UVM and I have not done any type of exercise. Hopefully I'll shake it soon and be back recharged and ready to run.

From fly on the Wall on Wed, Jun 20, 2012 at 16:34:01 from 204.113.19.47

"Action proceeds motivation."

From DaleG on Wed, Jun 20, 2012 at 18:37:24 from 66.87.65.255

Wow Rhett, I know exactly how you feel. After I got really sick the weekend of UVM, it took a lot out of me, too. I have really been struggling and have only been able to run a couple of miles here and there. It's not a good feeling. I hope we can both get some motivation soon.

From Kelli on Wed, Jun 20, 2012 at 19:22:05 from 67.172.235.55

A good, long break is not a bad thing at all. It is a GOOD thing. I am looking forward to mine. ;o)

From timp on Mon, Jun 25, 2012 at 19:57:32 from 99.110.188.230

enjoy a little time away from it, Rhett. sometimes we all need that

From Burt on Tue, Jul 03, 2012 at 13:30:17 from 72.223.80.161

Sounds scary Rhett. Glad you're ok.

From timp on Thu, Jul 05, 2012 at 14:07:39 from 144.188.24.31

how's it going Rhett?

From Smooth on Thu, Jul 05, 2012 at 20:58:06 from 71.213.102.15

How's time away from running? Hope you and your family had a great 4th of July and are enjoying the summer.

From DaleG on Fri, Jul 13, 2012 at 21:56:55 from 152.216.3.5

You still alive, Rhett? Sure do miss reading about your runs.
