I've really gotta start training for UVM so I can run a Boston qualifying time perferable 20 minutes faster than my BQ time so I can register early.  Problem is, I can't run, so I'm looking for things I can do that are as close to running as possible, but don't hurt my knee.

10 minutes elliptical- Zero Pain

20 minutes running the stair machine, 1:20 fast walk/ 1:20 top speed (slow running pace)- Zero pain!

Lower body weights- Zero pain

Core work- abs and pushups

I was pretty excited to be able to run the stairs without pain.  I got the "I ran hard" feeling that makes us all come back to running.  And, I think I can do a pretty good training program even if I can only run stairs!

Sounds like you have a good plan in place. I'm trying to put together a similar plan with a lot of elliptical and lots of stairs (walking, not running) and some cycling of course.

Seriously you need to get it together because I like our Boston trips as much as you do! I really want to go back next year and you're my ticket into the thing:-) I do miss seeing the smile on your face when you have finished a great run. You will get there - you always do. Love you.

Still so sorry your knee is bugging you.

I love your comment about the "I ran hard feeling." That really is what keeps me running. When you stop and think about it running down the road early in the morning, going nowhere in particular,is a pretty strange thing to do. But it all makes sense when you consider that feeling.

Maybe you can cheat your way to a BQ. Have someone else run for you. Take a shortcut. Come on, Bishop. Nobody will know.

Don't break the stair machine!!! :)

Actually, I noticed that Fritz does the stair machine a TON when he is injured and he never seems to lose speed!!!!

Nice thinking, Bish!

Boy am I out of it.... Bummer! Sorry to hear about your knee.

20 minutes faster than BQ gets you early registration? Hmmm.... This might be a good goal for me.

I just looked at the Boston page and see that BQ times are getting faster in 2013... Like I said, I haven't been paying attention.
