HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Last year on New Years Day I ran my own personal marathon which I won, :)  of course I was the only one running, but I turned in a pretty good time and was happy with the run.

This year I decided to run my own personal ultramarthon.  I predetermined a 40 mile run that I would embark upon.  Unfortunately I did not win this year even though I was the only one running.  I had to take a DNF, but I still had a good run which I'm happy with.

Doone decided we needed to throw a New Years Eve party which was a lot of fun, so we had a house full off guest until about 1am.  By the time we got cleaned up and I got my running things together, it was almost 2.  I took off on my run and started way too fast.  The first mile was right about 7 minutes.  I backed off that pace, but still finished the first ten miles averaging a bit faster than 8:00.  I finally found a good rhythm on the next 10 miles were I averaged around 8:25.  Four miles into the next 10 miles I had a 4 mile climb of about 600 feet and that really kicked my butt.  I never really recovered from that.  My legs started hurting pretty good, around mile 30 and I decided I better head home to avoid any prolonged recovery time.  I never cramped and I never walked, but I did not finish my planned 40.

I'll just have to try again another day when I can be more rested.  The whole day was a busy day working out in the yard for about 5 hours and then we had to set up for the party and have the party.

Anyways it took my 4hours 40 minutes to run the 32.7 miles I did finish for and AP of 8:34.

I have some major admiration for Crocket who just finished that 48 hour race having run 187 miles.  Amazing!!!!

Wow Rhett!!! Very impressive. I bet without the yard work, party and more sleep you would have completed the 40 without any problems. You should do an official ultra!

From seeaprilrun on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 19:50:52 from 72.205.226.14

Awesome way to celebrate! I can't imagine running that far at once just cuz!

From Teena Marie on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 20:14:42 from 67.2.114.66

DANG!!!!! :) :) :)

You never cease to impress.

You are one crazy studly running fool!!! :) :) :)

Happy New Year!!!

From Kathie on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 21:53:21 from 63.248.105.188

Oh my...I am not sure what to say...those are some crazy miles!

I think you should talk to the race director and have him change the distance so you can claim your first place finish!

From Smooth on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 22:07:59 from 67.2.79.80

Kathie ~ you are too FUNNY!!!

WOW Rhett!!! AWESOME NEW YEAR ULTRA!!! SO very impressive! LOVE LOVE LOVE your spontaneity, tenacity, VERY INSPIRING!!! I don't know if I could ever do an ultra solo. U DA Capt'n!!!

From Doone on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 22:42:29 from 216.67.218.76

I am not sure if I should congratulate you or sign you up for counseling to make sure you aren't insane???

I really am proud of you though and am glad you made it back alive ( as the wife I always worry). I love you and way to go on the mileage.

Soon I will be calling you coach again and then my messages to you might not be so sweet so until then ... I love you and way to go!

From Andy on Sun, Jan 02, 2011 at 15:36:24 from 174.52.172.236

I was wondering what you were going to pull off for this new year's run. Even if you didn't get to 40 miles you still ran an ultra. Great job on an amazing run.

From Burt on Sun, Jan 02, 2011 at 15:39:26 from 173.87.186.51

Sorry about the DNF. You should have went for a 50k instead.

You and Teena are the mileage king and queen so far this year. (I triple checked this time Teena.)

LOL @ Doone. When I went running yesterday the last thing my wife told me was 'don't die!'

From Kelli on Sun, Jan 02, 2011 at 17:23:11 from 71.219.84.215

Isn't a :little" run like that eye opening when you think of what CRAZY Crockett does all of the time????

Way to go on your Ultra, you ran a little over a 50k, so that is awesome! I might have made it 5k on no sleep!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Amazing 2AM Ultra! Happy New Year, Rhett!

From Rhett on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 11:30:34 from 74.41.249.102

Dale, yeah I was regretting the fact that I had been working outside all day in the cold wind. I think that was my downfall.

April, I've seen your running. You could totally do it if you decided to.

Teena, thanks and Happy New Year!

Kathie, I am tight with the race director. Maybe he'll cut me some slack.

Smooth, there is no doubt in my mind that you could do anything you set your mind to. You are amazing.

Doone, I may need counselling, but at least I know it. Soon I'll have you out there running ultras with me.

Andy, thanks, it's fun to start off the year with something different.

Burt, I guess I better get out and run so I can stay the milage king, and I am honored that Teena is the milage queen at the same time.

Kelli, yes I was following Crocket's 48 hour run while it was going on. I think my friends and family were getting tired of my constant updates, but I was amazed.

Marc, Happy New Year!!!!

Hey that's cool. I am planning a 40 miler for my 40th. Unfortunately it will be a week delayed because of some other family events, but I'll give it a shot. At least it sounds good at this point...

Happy new year!

From Rhett on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 11:54:28 from 74.41.249.102

Tim, you'll totally make it. My only advice is get some sleep before doing it and don't spend the day doing physical labor before it either.

From Andy on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 11:54:53 from 199.190.170.22

Tim - I have the same thing planned this year. Is yours this year?

From timp on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 12:00:10 from 144.188.24.25

yeah Rhett - I'll give it a shot. I just need to figure out a good route.

Andy - my B.d is this Saturday but our neighbor is getting married that afternoon and my wife doesn't want me to be totally wiped out for the whole thing... so it will have to be the next Saturday. When is yours?

From Andy on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 12:14:10 from 199.190.170.22

Tim - You are way older than me. Mine isn't until September.

From DonGardinero on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 12:37:23 from 173.127.39.94

I thought about running 41 miles on my birthday in a few weeks, but I THink it would kill me. Maybe I will do 41k.

From timp on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 13:36:06 from 144.188.24.25

Yeah Andy - my legs feel way old today...

Dale - I thought of that K vs mile option too, we'll see what I can do. There is only so many times we can do this, you know. I'm thinking a 70 miler at 70 might be a bit much, but I should be able to somehow walk, stumble, and crawl 40 miles at 40. Maybe :)

From DonGardinero on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 13:41:53 from 173.127.39.94

Tim, I THink 70 at 70 would put me in my grave for sure. Lol

From timp on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 14:32:33 from 144.188.24.25

start training now :)

From Rhett on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 15:43:03 from 74.32.222.21

Tim and Andy, sounds like we are all about the same age. I turn 40 in May, that is how I decided to go for 40 miles. I'm thinking about a redo in Feb.

From Kelli on Mon, Jan 03, 2011 at 20:42:34 from 71.219.84.215

My family got in on the action, they loved it. There was a 13 year old boy running the 72 hour race, they enjoyed checking in on him and trying to pick him out of the crowd.

You should have taped your ultra, we would have watched that, too!
