As many of you know, I strained my calf pretty good on Tuesday and was not sure if I was going to race this race.  Friday morning I gave it a 2 mile test run, and I was still not sure if I was going to race.  I knew this wasn't a goal race and I definitely did not want to cause any serious injury.

All day Friday I kept changing my mind if I was going to race or not.  I must have definitely decided to race or not to race 20 times.  I also had the option of switching down to the 30K, which I decided to do a few times as well.  I figured I better carb load since I could be possibly running a marathon the next day.  As I ate I laughed that I might just be making myself fat, since I might not run.  Pancakes at IHOP was my carb loading dinner.  YUM!

We made it to Death Valley about 8 pm  and settled into our little hotel room.  After getting in bed I laid there debating on wether or not to run.  I decided I would get up in the morning for a test run and that if it felt the same as it did when I ran Friday morning, that I would not run and would just spend a fun day with the family in Death Valley.  If it felt better than it did Friday morning, but not 100% I would do the 30K, and if it felt 100% I would do the full marathon.  As I dosed off, I fully expected that I would be doing the 30K.

I slept really well and then got up about 5:30 and went for my test run.  To my utter surprise, I had zero pain or tightness or discomfort of any kind.  I even did a few sprints just to make sure and it was all good.

Doone and the kids dropped me off at the race and I met some nice runners.  Runners have to be the most friendly people in the world.  It's like you are instant buddies with all these people you've never met before and will probably never meet again.  They bussed us the the race start.  We were running the alternate course on a dirt/gravel road that runs through the lowest place in northern hemisphere.  It was very flat, but the road was seriously rutted and the gravel rocks were big and hurt your feet.  It was hard to ever land properly.

I had no real goal except to get in a good training run, have fun, not injure myself, and not be sore the next day so I could continue my Boston training.  My game plan was to find someone running a nice easy pace and run with them.  I did just that, running with a nice guy from LA.  We were hitting pretty consistent 7 minute miles and I was surprised when we hit the turn around at 1:32:00 and we were tied for 4th place.  We headed back and our pace picked up a bit, running in the 6:50s until at the 20 mile aid station I missed the water and stopped and went back to get some.  By the time I got going again he was a good 50 yards ahead of me.  I thought about speeding up and catching him as I was still feeling good, but then my mantra "Training Run" popped into my head and I decided this was a good time to let him go and just coast in for the final 6 miles.  I did just that averaging a little over 8 minute miles for the last 6 and finished in 3:08:53 feeling really good and happy with my effort.

I ended up getting 5th overall and 2nd in my AG.

I spent a fun afternoon with my family seeing Death Valley.  We decided we needed to come back when we had a few days to spend.  The kids had a blast that morning playing in the sand dunes and doing a few other things.

My legs feel great today.  I have absolutely no soreness or discomfort anywhere.  And I am still amazed how my calf improved overnight.  I'm going to be careful with it the next week or two though.

I am SOOOO HAPPY to hear that you ran a SUCCESSFUL training run! You had a smart plan going in deciding whether to run it or not and ended up running SO WELL!!!! CONGRATULATIONS! Very nicely done to get 5th overall and 2nd in your AG. WAY to be patient and exercise self-control and not let the competitive juice take over this "training run". SO AWESOME!!!

Glad Doone and the kids had a great time too! Sounds like you're already recovering well! :)

Great run for a training run. That should make you feel pretty confident going into Boston. Interesting note, your time would have got you 10th place last year.

Amazing "training run"! I don't know why you tortured yourself with debating on whether or not to run. You knew there was no way you were not going to run the marathon. Glad to hear that there is no soreness today. Any issues with your feet?

Smooth and I were dying to know how you did!!! :)

Very nice! :)

Superman! I'm very impressed with your fitness level, especially if you aren't pushing hard with seven minute miles. Still, you played it smart and came out smelling like roses. Congrats.

By the way, what was the winner's finish time?

From MarcE on Sun, Feb 07, 2010 at 23:05:33 from 206.225.68.137

You make me sick...in a good way! :)

I'm always amazed by your positive attitude, and your ability to just run! Nice run, Rhett! Congrats on 2nd AG--what did you win? Do they have a cool finisher medal?

From jtshad on Mon, Feb 08, 2010 at 10:30:02 from 204.134.132.225

Great job on a training run. Looking good for Boston!

From Rhett on Mon, Feb 08, 2010 at 11:22:30 from 74.41.249.102

Smooth, thanks. It was tough to turn off the competitive juices and pull back some, but I'm glad I did.

Burt, well I'm glad I ran this year then. I'll take 5th over 10th any time.

Andy, I really did not think I was going to run the race for a bit. I just didn't want to make a small injury worse. And no, my feet did not give me any problems. I think I'm over that for now.

Tim, thanks.

Teena, I loved the voice mail. You gals are too fun or should I say funny.

Dale, the winner was 3:01:? Maybe I should have bagged Boston and gone for the victory in Death Valley.

Marc, I didn't stay around for the awards, but they are supposed to mail me a ribbon. The medal was a typical finishers medal. Nothing special.

jtshad, thanks. Are you doing Boston this year?

From jtshad on Mon, Feb 08, 2010 at 11:47:15 from 204.134.132.225

I am not running Boston this year, other plans for that time of year. I am running the B&A Trail marathon on March 7 and Ogden in May.

From DonGardinero on Mon, Feb 08, 2010 at 12:34:07 from 75.162.101.167

Oh man, I know you could have taken first place!!! Oh well, there's always next year.

From RivertonPaul on Mon, Feb 08, 2010 at 16:20:30 from 67.42.27.114

Very well done. Way to go.

Still don't know how you held back not sure if I could have done the same.

From Kelli on Mon, Feb 08, 2010 at 18:35:02 from 71.219.89.82

I am so glad to hear that you were feeling 100% and able to run!! AND you did awesome for a training run, WOW!! Death Valley is pretty cool, especially when it is not 110 degrees or more.

You are right, runners are the best!

Speedy recovery to you, sounds like you are doing great.

From Mack on Mon, Feb 08, 2010 at 19:05:10 from 71.111.182.118

Very cool Rhett. Congrats on shaking the injury, having the wisdom to not go after that guy towards the end, and having a great race. Sounds like you had a great time with your family too. Doesn't get any better than all of that on one weekend!!

From Huans32 on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 14:12:26 from 138.64.8.51

Awesome job on the race. Glad to hear that your injury wasn't a issue on race day. I just hate tapering. You never know if what your feeling is real or just phantom pains.

From Rhett on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 19:05:54 from 74.32.219.217

Thanks Mark. Thing is I wasn't tapering. I did a 13 mile run on Monday and was doing weights and stairs on Tuesday when I hurt my calf. Then I was forced into a semi taper for the next few days. It actually probably helped me run faster.
