I started off with a MAF Test for baseline purposes of my new training where all my running for a while will be with my HR at 140 or lower. This consisted of a half mile warm up followed by 3 miles with a HR as close to 140 without going over as possible:  Mile 1- 8:02, Mile 2- 8:30, Mile 3- 8:40.

I then headed to SARA Park and ran the trails for another 6 miles keeping the HR under 140.  It was humid because of the rain storm last night and 93 degrees, so I became a bit dehydrated on the last couple miles and it was really hard to keep my HR under 140. I had to do a lot of walking at the end to keep the HR down.

Looks like it's hotter there than it is here.

Interesting training method. Where does 140 BPM fall in your aerobic zone?

From Rhett on Tue, Jun 30, 2015 at 10:18:26 from 24.121.249.174

As described by Dr. Phil Maffetone, 180 minus your age, then plus 5 since I have been training consistently for over 2 years is my Maximum Aerobic Function. This means it is the maximum HR which I can train without going Anaerobic. Keeping it aerobic one burns mainly fat as fuel. As soon as you go above the MAF you go anaerobic and you start burning glycogen as fuel. Mark Allen trained this way for years and he was the best ironman triathlete of all time. I figured I've give it a shot.

So for me ...(184-55)+5=134...?

The formula I used before calculates mine a littler higher at about 138. I probably don't run at or below this zone (134-138) nearly enough. Looking back at my training runs there's probably only 10% that are actually at or below that zone.

Yep it's really slow at first, but supposedly over time you run faster and faster with that same low HR. Go to maffetone.com and it explains it better. I just stumbled across it and found it quite interesting.

Oops, that's philmaffetone.com

This is very interesting. I will spend some time to read through it. Are you signed up or just going by what you've read on the website?

As far as the running only in the aerobic zone, this might be good for me, especially right now after my injury. I should also do the MAF test and get rid of all the carbs and sugars and see how I feel.

From Rhett on Tue, Jun 30, 2015 at 18:12:28 from 199.117.154.54

I'm not signed up for anything. I just read the website and am trying to follow it. I'm only a week in but I feel good so far. I'm tired of being injured so if I can really get faster by only running slow that would be great.
