I broke out the heart rate monitor for the first time in about a decade and decided to try and run while keeping my HR under 140 (The Fat Burning Zone for me).  I did it on the trails which means lots of ups and downs.  I was actually better at keeping it under 140 on the ups than downs.  Whenever my HR would go over 140 I would walk until it went back under.  I did a lot of walking out there. It took me an hour and 25 minutes to run 7 miles.  I felt really great when I was done though.

Not exactly, but when you go into your anaerobic zone, for me over 140, your body is almost exclusively burning carbs, were as in the aerobic zone, under 140 for me, your body uses mostly fat as fuel. I'm doing this to teach my body to use fat as fuel not to get leaner. I read that Mark Allen (probably the best triathlete of all time) did most of his training in the aerobic zone so I figured I'd give it a try and see what happens.

For me being younger they say my rate is around 150. When I started getting more serious about breaking 3 hours for the marathon a trained around 150 for a few months and it worked. Another side affect to this training is that you are not taxing your body as much and will help prevent injuries. If you keep training at that rate your body will adjust and be able to do more at that lower heart rate using less energy allowing for the wall to be extended further into your races. I've been thinking about using this training method again this summer.

Cool Jeff, I had only read about it and it sounded interesting, but now I know someone who actually did it and it worked for them. I plan on doing it for a few months just to see what happens.
