I woke up at 4am and got ready to run.  I wasn't hungry so just had a glass of water before heading out the door.  About half mile into my run I realized I had forgotten to put any gu packs into my hydration belt which just had water in it.  I thought about heading back for some but decided to keep on going.  I was doing 20 miles.

The first 10 were uneventful.  I didn't push the pace since I new I was running without carbs.  I hit the 10 mile mark just under 1:15 for an average of 7:30 miles.  About half mile into the first mile of the second 10 I could feel my energy levels dropping.  I slowed to pace a bit to try and conserve energy, but it wasn't long before I felt like I was on a death march.  That was a tough 10 miles and the last 2 I felt like I wasn't even running straight anymore.  I was just focusing on putting one foot in front of the other.  By the time I got home I was a bit delirious and I'm still not feeling too good.  The second 10 miles took me 1:24:15 averaging about 8:28 miles.

Total run 20 miles, 2:39:15,  AP 7:59

Too make me feel just a little bit worse, I logged onto the SGM web site and found out that Doone and I didn't get drawn for the big race.  Oh well, we'll just have to find another one to do.

20 miles with NO fuel?!!! And you have no body fat for reserve either! Is that what hitting the wall feels like to you? Hope you've eaten and re-loaded as soon as you got home.

I am sooo sorry about the stinkin' SGM lottery. I was so hoping to see Doone BQ there! May be you two can run one of the two new Utah marathons, Layton the week after SGM or South Jordan, the week before!

Have a GREAT weekend! Please tell Doone HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY from me! :)

Rhett, I am so sorry about SGM. I was so looking forward to running with you, and it is extra-disappointing considering the impact also on your wife.

From DonGardinero on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 14:09:37 from 75.162.172.169

SO you are human, after all!!! That run sounds like one of my marathons.

It really stinks that you and Doone weren't selected for SGM. Hey, now's your chance for Top of Utah...Or maybe even the Layton Marathon. If, for some reason I don't finish the Slam, I'm going to try the Layton Marathon.

got to love the death march days! what's the occasion for doing 20? You have another marathon coming up ? UVM?

From Kathie on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 16:01:49 from 63.248.105.188

Wow that was a killer 20, they say running on empty will help your kick at the end of a marathon but seriously dude that was a little dangerous! I hope Doone yelled at you!

Sorry to get on your case, I just came to your blog to say how sad I was that you didn't make the lottery but when I read your post the mother in me made me tell you off. Forgive me!

From timp on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 16:34:08 from 144.189.100.25

yeah I do agree that learning to run when you are on E is a good thing mentally at least. Although I'm sure people would disagree with that...

From Rhett on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 16:50:58 from 74.32.222.202

Smooth, yep I've only ever had that feeling a few times. I ran smack into a huge wall and never recovered. Happy Mother's Day to you as well.

Paul, we'll just have to do UVM together. Your running has been pretty solid lately.

Dale, yep, I like everyone else need some energy source to run. We're thinking about doing the Pocatello Maraton Labor Day weekend.

Tim, yep I'm doing UVM. I wasn't planning on going without any fuel, but I had just read an article about how Meb does some long training runs with just water to make running with fuel feel easier. When I realized I had forgotten the gu, I decided I'd see how my body responded to the carb depletion. It hurt! But I may try it again some and see if I can get used to running without fuel.

Kathie, LOL I feel fine now that I'm refueled. It took a few hours though. I'm so excited for you and your son. Doone and I will have fun doing another marathon.

I like to to that as well. I think it makes race day a little "easier". Either way, great job getting up and getting it done.

From Smooth on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 17:03:56 from 174.23.172.155

Rhett ~ Lowell has tried to get me to run the Pocatello Marathon the last couple years. Looks like a great friendly marathon with a gentle downhill course. I may give that one a try this year.

From Rhett on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 17:25:56 from 74.32.222.202

Smooth, Doone ran the 1/2 there last year. They give our really good swag there. Plus it is only $45 to register for the full. Looks like a fun marathon. I talked to Doone at lunch and I think we are leaning towards doing that one.

From Smooth on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 17:30:11 from 174.23.172.155

OK, you have me sold! I may do the Half since Park City is two weeks before!

From Andy on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 18:16:11 from 198.60.114.178

Way to tough it out. I think it makes it easier to deal with when it happens in a marathon.

I'm bummed out about SGM. There is no way I could have hung with you but it would have been fun to try.

From Rhett on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 18:22:23 from 74.32.222.202

Andy, I was thinking about how fit you must have been and still are, to have run SGM 2008 so fast just 2 weeks after TOU that year. As I ran this morning and was crashing I was even more amazed how you did that. I'm betting you go sub 3 at Ogden and then PR SGM this year.

From MarcE on Sat, May 08, 2010 at 19:00:05 from 204.16.82.120

Rhett..I think you learned something very valuable during this long run. That those GUs you take, are actually needed. I've always wondered how far I could run with just water...but am afraid to try it. Way to stick it out.

About SGM, are Charity spots really expensive? I know Lark has gotten in via them in the past. I'm holding out hope that I'll see you and Doone in October.

From Teena Marie on Sun, May 09, 2010 at 10:58:22 from 174.52.45.85

FIRST OFF: I am completely upset that you and Doone are not into SGM. Isn't there some way around that??? DANG!!!!

SECOND: You crazy boy!!!! Seriously ... just water?????? What were you thinking??? (Far too hardcore.)

THIRD: Will you please tell Doone "Happy Mother's Day" for me???? I wish you two lived closer SO SO SO badly.
