After no real running for 2 1/2 weeks I was excited to run this morning with my sweetie.  It was 85 degrees when we took off a little after 5.  My leg hurt to start but nothing like when I tried to run last week.  As we got going it started feeling better until about mile 9.  The last 5 miles the pain was increasing, but I finished.  We jumped in the pool to cool off when we were done.  That felt really good.

14 miles, AP 9:55

I'm no closer to deciding if I will run UVM after this morning's run, but at least I'm not a definite "no".  I guess it will be a race day decision.

I am so glad you were able to get in some miles with your lovely Doone. :)

Although I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish you would have stopped at 9 -- but I imagine the pull to run with your sweetheart was just to much. Understandable. ;)

How are you feeling now? More importantly, if at all possible will you let us know how you feel tomorrow?

About UVM -- that's a tough call. I certainly wouldn't try to race it though. Seriously, tough call.

Here's to a great day!

From DonGardinero on Sat, Jun 05, 2010 at 15:18:17 from 75.162.177.105

That's a tough call, especially knowing that you like to go all out for the marathons you run. I'm posting this from my phone, which isn't easy. lol

From Smooth on Sat, Jun 05, 2010 at 16:48:52 from 174.23.172.155

I got all excited when I saw your 14 miler with Doone! I'm sorry to hear the pain came back. STINK!!!

Keep the RICE thing going today and tomorrow. Here's to a speedy recovery!

From Kathie on Sat, Jun 05, 2010 at 19:17:01 from 63.248.105.188

Rest up! I am sure thing will work out, at least you got to run will your sweetie again!

From Rhett on Sun, Jun 06, 2010 at 18:14:19 from 184.10.154.170

Teena, I probably would have stopped around mile 9, but I was about 5 miles away from home no matter which direction I went.

My leg is not doing well today. I am now 100% sure I will not be running UVM. I still plan on being there though and look forward to cheering you guys in and seeing everyone after the race. I think it is probably time to have my leg looked at by an orthopedic sports doc. I'll call one tomorrow.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jun 06, 2010 at 20:33:20 from 174.52.45.85

Oh Rhett, I am so sorry.

Think back ... remember how you and I were bot injured a year ago and neither one of us got better until we completely stopped running for 6 weeks? It is so tempting to test that baby out ... but in serious injuries that just prolongs the inevitable.

I am still crossing my fingers that the doc will have some great news for you.

What was the pain like though? Was it more stabbing, aching, or burning? Or something entirely different?

Can't help but thing of what N8R had to do to get his Post Tib healed. Dang!!! You have a great attitude though, I am very impressed.

From timp on Mon, Jun 07, 2010 at 08:57:15 from 144.189.100.25

Rhett - so sorry it isn't healing up as fast as you'd like. This just gives you a chance to focus on some cross training and come back re-focused.

From Rhett on Mon, Jun 07, 2010 at 17:24:21 from 74.32.223.102

I made an appointment with the doc today. I'll see him tomorrow afternoon. I'm guessing I'll fork out a ton of money and be told not to run until it feels better.

Teena, the pain is a very sharp pain that I can feel on the back of my tibia. Yesterday I couldn't walk. Today I can but the pain level is very high.

I'll let you guys know what I find out tomorrow.

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 07, 2010 at 17:52:45 from 174.23.172.155

Oh Rhett! I am so sorry! Keeping my fingers crossed that the doctor has some good answers for you.

From Teena Marie on Mon, Jun 07, 2010 at 22:55:39 from 174.52.45.85

DANG!!! Okay, promise me that when you see the doc that you just won't take what he has to say without asking ALL of your questions. I am always nervous to disagree with a doc, but dang't if you are paying for good medical care, if something doesn't sound or feel right ... say something!!! Seriously, you have done a lot of research ... utilize it.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Hang in there.

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 00:24:05 from 71.219.93.114

Well, nice run with your wife anyway! Sorry about the pain, that really stinks. Just come to Utah anyway and I will buy you and your kiddos some really good ice cream!

From MrsFIT on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 11:49:41 from 98.202.0.57

Keep us posted about your leg - positive thoughts being sent your way!

From Teena Marie on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 14:15:41 from 174.52.45.85

Patiently awaiting to hear what the doc has to say.

From Mack on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 15:27:59 from 71.111.186.66

Hope it's good news Rhett. I don't know near as much about running and injuries as you do, but if you want my opinion, DON'T RUN UVM! I think it would be wise to rest and heal so that you can run many more marathons in the future.

From Huans32 on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 15:37:46 from 138.64.8.52

Well just decide race morning. And if anything just take it easier on it. Maybe even dare I say slower?? Maybe you should just hang with Slick and I.

From Rhett on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 15:44:22 from 74.32.223.102

After the pain I was in on Sunday and yesterday, I've already decided I won't be running Saturday. I'll probably even leave my running shoes at home so I won't be tempted. I do plan on being there cheering for everyone at the finish though. I'm excited for all of you that will be running.

From Teena Marie on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 16:11:31 from 174.52.45.85

What did the doc say?

From Rhett on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 16:25:27 from 74.32.223.102

My appointment is not for another hour.

From Smooth on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 21:25:50 from 174.23.172.155

How did the doc visit go? Did he answer your questions satisfactorily? Hope you have good news!!!

From Teena Marie on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 22:22:36 from 174.52.45.85

I hope no news is good news.

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 23:16:52 from 71.219.93.114

Sorry about the race, BUT I hope you guys have fun here anyway! At least it is not as hot!

From Rhett on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 23:33:32 from 184.10.154.170

Sorry to keep everyone waiting. It's just been a crazy evening.

My doc appointment was disappointing to say the least. I was there for 2 1/2 hours. For the first 2hrs and 15 minutes all that was done was the x-ray tech took x-rays. Finally the doc came in, asked me a few questions, wacked my leg with this hammer thing and moved my foot around and asked what hurt. Then he said I needed an MRI, because he didn't know what was wrong. He wants me to go all the way to Phoenix for the MRI, because they have a better machine there. So basically I don't know anything more now than I did before the appointment.

I now have to decide if it is worth going all the way to Phoenix, missing a day of work, and paying for an MRI to find out what is wrong, or if I should just quit running until it doesn't hurt anymore.

From DonGardinero on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 23:39:34 from 152.216.7.5

Dang, Rhett. I really hate going to doctors. Don't they have top of the line MRI machines like in Las Vegas? Isn't that closer? I can't believe he wants to send you all the way to Phoenix. I'm not saying you should do this, but if I were in your shoes, I would just not run until it feels better, but that's just me.

From Teena Marie on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 23:40:25 from 174.52.45.85

Oh Rhett -- that plain stinks.

What exactly are they looking for with the MRI?

It seems that the human body has a miraculous way of taking care of itself most of the time if we let it. What does your gut tell you? What does Doone think?

From timp on Wed, Jun 09, 2010 at 08:23:15 from 66.167.50.103

Sorry it was so frustrating Rhett.

I know you'll make the right decision.

I know I'd just skip the docs and just wait until it doesn't hurt anymore. What are they going to do anyway...besides tell you to stop running?

From fly on the Wall on Wed, Jun 09, 2010 at 09:50:43 from 204.113.19.47

"...wacked my leg with this hammer thing and moved my foot around and asked what hurt." After 2 1/2 hours I would have really wanted to wack something/someone else with that hammer thing. I would have thought that you as a "doc" (O.D.?) might have received some sort expedited treatment as a professional curtesy. Instead you got to build empathy for your patients.

As for the MRI, anyway you could get it done while up here for UVM? There must be a few of the fancy machines in Salt Lake or Utah County.

From Rhett on Wed, Jun 09, 2010 at 16:23:11 from 74.32.223.102

I went ahead and scheduled the MRI. Since I'll be out of town this weekend (Fly, I thought about trying to do it while I'm there, but it doesn't work into my schedule.) I won't be able to do it until a week from Friday. Hopefully I will know for sure what all the pain is about.

I'm excited to see many of you on Saturday. Good luck in the race.

From Kelli on Wed, Jun 09, 2010 at 18:39:43 from 71.219.93.114

Here is what i was gonna say: I know you are tough, so if it is hurting that bad, and you have taken it easy, I would go in and find out what is up! Sounds like you already decided that, though.

That appointment must have been so frustrating! I hate being kept waiting like that. And then to get NO NEWS!?! FRUSTRATING.

From Smooth on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 10:54:09 from 174.23.172.155

I'm so sorry for the frustrating doc. visit. You have such a good attitude about the whole thing. I really admire you for that. I am sure you will make the best of the situation, have fun and enjoy the visit to Utah and not get too down on yourself. It must be so hard to be sidelined. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Hope the expensive MRI gives a good picture of what is going on and there are solutions to the source of the pain.

Have a safe fun trip this weekend. Can't wait to see you and your darling children!

From Teena Marie on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 11:31:22 from 174.52.45.85

Hey there!

It was so good to see you for the split of a second! Slick and I went back looking for you later but couldn't find you. :(

How is the leg?

How you holding up?

From Rhett on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 13:51:40 from 74.41.249.102

Teena, thanks for checking in. I'm fine, just waiting till Fri. for my MRI so I can figure this thing out.

Too bad you weren't able to stop by the forum get together. It was fun to see everyone. Looked like you ran a great race. I'll be posting pictures of the forumites I saw finish soon on the other blog. Congrats on a great race.

It was so good to see you at Cougar's. THANK YOU so much for coming all the way to cheer us. Hope you have good news with the MRI!

Sheesh Rhett, just come on and blog something even if it is not running related. I kind of miss hearing form you.

From Kelli on Thu, Jun 17, 2010 at 19:59:29 from 71.219.93.114

So, then, no news I guess?

From DonGardinero on Sat, Jun 19, 2010 at 12:07:01 from 75.162.167.16

Hey Rhett, when is/was your MRI? I thought I saw somewhere on the blog that it was yesterday. Hope everything is ok.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Jun 19, 2010 at 12:45:25 from 174.52.45.85

Have they read your MRI yet? You did have it yesterday, right?

Please let us know as soon as possible.

You know that we worry about you.

From Rhett on Sat, Jun 19, 2010 at 13:39:36 from 74.32.223.102

Thanks for the posts. They made me smile.

No news. I had the MRI last night, but they just said that my doc would tell me the results within 2 to 3 bussiness days.

As they were unstrapping my legs, a couple minutes after the MRI was complete, someone piped in on a speaker and said "Are you a runner?" I said "Yes", and then there was no more converstation. I'm wondering if someone was looking at the results and saw some injury that is very common in runners. If it is not a stress fracture, I will be very surprised. It just feels like a broken bone when I walk on it.

It was a fun evening. My wonderful sweetie went with me and we went to the Mesa Temple and then out for dinner before heading home.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Jun 19, 2010 at 13:46:21 from 174.52.45.85

I am glad you had fun with your lovely Doone! You two fit perfectly!!! :)

Why didn't you holler, "Why do you ask ... tell me what you see!!!" Likely the would not have said anything ... but the waiting must be killing you. Well ... at least with a stress fracture you know exactly what you need to fix the problem. Dang ... I'm worried about you.

How close are you with your doc? Any chance he would expedite things for you?

From RivertonPaul on Sat, Jun 19, 2010 at 14:33:38 from 97.117.120.35
